Eight

Felisa sat outside her room, nestling Nate against her and listening to the quiet. The only sound was the splash of the fountain and an occasional birdcall. She’d weighed her thoughts carefully, and though she still had no idea what had disturbed Chad, she sensed his interest in Nate was from his heart and nothing more.

Chad seemed too tender and too loving to want to take her little boy from her. She winced at the evil thought that had settled into her mind. Chad, a Christian through and through, would no more hurt her than he would hurt Joy or Faith. A chill of loneliness settled over her. Usually she would have gone with Chad to tend to the girls, but today he’d not invited her. She still struggled to recall what she might have done to offend him.

Being the nanny seemed almost a waste of time. She’d been close to the girls before when Mrs. Drake was nanny and she still did chores around the house. Now Gloria had been hired to help Juanita, and Felisa could spend more time with Nate; but she also had more time to think and to brood. The happiness she’d felt for the past weeks had faded like a wilting rose.

Glancing down, she noticed Nate had drifted to sleep. She rose, carried him to his crib, and placed him down for a nap, then set the monitor in case she went inside the house for some reason. From her chair outside, she could hear his cry. She closed the screen door softly and settled again on the chair in the warm sunlight, trying to recapture the contentment she’d felt until the past week.

The crunch of automobile tires sounded around the corner of the house, and she looked up to see Chad’s dark-blue sedan pull in front of the garage as the door opened. The girls scampered out, each carrying a package. They darted toward her, and her loneliness dissipated.

“Did you have fun?” she asked.

Joy nodded while Faith opened her parcel and pulled out a box. “Look what Daddy bought me.”

When Chad’s shadow fell at Felisa’s feet, she glanced up. His sad eyes glided over her before he walked away into the house.

“Aren’t you going to look at my present?” Faith asked, holding the box in front of her.

She pulled her gaze from Chad’s retreating back and forced a smile. “Let me see.”

Faith opened the box and pulled out wind chimes attached to a brightly painted metal sunflower. “Listen.” She held the flower in the air, letting the metal pieces tinkle as they struck one another.

“It’s beautiful,” Felisa said. “We can hang it on the edge of the portico so it will be stirred by the breeze.”

“Will you help me hang it?” she asked.

“We’ll need a hammer and nails.” Felisa paused. “Maybe your daddy can hang it better. He’s taller.”

“Okay,” she said, skipping off while Joy stood beside her holding her little box in her hands.

“Do you want to see my present?”

“I do,” Felisa said, realizing from Joy’s expression she felt left out.
